Plein Air Painting: Basic Materials for Watercolor

In this video I would like to address one of the questions I get asked quite often - the main question is what kind of gear do I need to paint with watercolor out of doors? and how to set up?

A good rule is it should be light and minimal until you feel a need to get larger

I look at the basics we need to work comfortably in the field. I prefer standing while others prefer sitting - the materials I talk about will work for either.

Hi Gary, that was so much fun. I loved seeing the set up and painting in the garden. Definitely brought a smile. And of course some useful information. As always you present excellent lessons, for whatever the subject happens to be. I think you make learning enjoyable regardless of how difficult the subject matter. At times the syllabus seems to show a lesson that appears SO DIFFICULT. But you always bring us through the process, with your calm teaching methods. I know the methods you use are lots of work for you to put together, but I can't t think of a clearer way to learn. I am so grateful. By the way. There may be misspelling s or typos in this note. It is difficult to see the writing on the background All the best to you, Sarah .

Gary, this was so helpful! As a newbie to plein air just last summer, and a lot of gear out there made for oil painters, I've wondered what plein air watercolor artists like yourself use. Love the idea of carrying a portfolio and a backpack! Will need to give that a try this year :) Thank you for sharing your setup!

Hi Gary, Great posting on plein air info! Informative, fun and clever. Your a one man band, you do it all! Love the plastic shield for shade and rain protection, perfect. Thanks so much for all the information sharing and of course the superb classes and instruction. The step by step process for painting different subjects is extremely helpful - I've learned so much watching your great flair with the brush. Magnifico!!....Most Sincerely, Pat

Gary, I haven't started watercolor yet, as you know, but watched this video. The beginning was your usual very clear, very helpful information. The second half, creation of the watercolor piece, was stupendous! I think you have another career waiting in the wings! Regina

Gary, you are a one-man band. GREAT, ENTERTAINING, VIDEO LESSON!
